How to Create your Villains-inspired runDisney Costume!

It is time! Yesterday we celebrated the return of runDisney races with registration dropping for the first race of the 2021/2022 season; Wine and Dine Half Marathon weekend! This race is probably my favorite, not just because it was my first runDisney event, but because of all the fun extras like the Post Race Party, and that it coincides with the Epcot Food & Wine Festival. I know many things will look different in time around, but I'm still so excited!

After much anticipation and speculation, lots of coffee and multiple devices, registration went surprisingly smooth, and many events are even still open 24 hours later. I was able to snag the Two-Course Challenge and the 5k, so I'll be running three consecutive days for the trifecta of the 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon! Maybe I'm crazy, or maybe I'm trying to make up for an entire year with no live events (probably a combination of both.)

While training should be at the forefront of my mind, let's be honest, the costumes are the best part of a runDisney event. Last year's Wickedly Delicious Villains theme is returning, so I'm expecting to see some incredible outfits this fall.

If you've visited here before, you know my four rules for creating a running costume, and they apply this time around too!

1. Function

Start with a bra designed for high impact activity and a proper fit for your cup size.

Then choose leggings or shorts that fit properly, meaning they shouldn't ride up or slide down, shouldn't cause chafing, should wick sweat and help regulate your temperature.

The same applies to shirts and tanks, but also consider the outdoor temperature, and if you need protection from wind, rain, or the sun.

Florida in November is usually pretty warm, but do consider that you're going to be waiting around in the wee hours of the morning on a large parking lot, so it can be chilly. Also keep in mind that it will be hot and sunny by the time you finish your race, so sweat wicking material is extremely important in your outfit!

2. Color Scheme

This is where your costume comes to life! Choose activewear that matches your favorite Villain or movie, and run with it. Often you can build off items you may already own, and only need to invest in a new shirt or leggings, and our next bit:

3. Accessorize

Crowns, jewelry, Ears, tutus, and skirts are the finishing touches to tie your whole look together!

I do advise testing out your accessories at least once before race day. There's nothing worse than finding out at mile 6 that your tutu is scratchy, or that your tiara won't stay on your head and you end up carrying it... Props are also a popular choice (think dinglehoppers, light sabers, frying pans, sidekick stuffed animals...) just keep in mind that 1) you have to carry that prop the whole time, so I recommend setting those costumes that need a prop aside for the shorter distances, and 2) runDisney does have some safety rules regarding costumes. Mainly it is to keep you and the runners around you safe, but always be sure to check your specific event's details and FAQs before you go.

4. Have Fun

And finally, have fun! These events aren't super competitive, and the majority are there to have a good time. Take all the photos, grab a snack as you jog through Epcot, and be courteous of other runners (especially those who ARE trying to race for a specific time.)

I imagine you're here for some inspo, so here we go:

Magic mirror on the wall, who's got the best activewear of them all?

(Psst, it's you rocking that ZYIA!)

If you want to channel the original Evil Queen, opt for black and dark purples or shades of plum! Pair it with a crown (or get creative with some craft foam!) and a heart necklace or brooch and you're on your way to some OG villain vibes.

I think hands down Maleficent is the best Disney Villain! Equal parts frightening and mysterious.

If you are brave an want to go all out, I have worn this latex headpiece inspired by Angelina Jolie's Maleficent. It looks amazing, but just know it's pretty warm and to be careful if you plan to run in it. There are lots of Ears, hats, and headbands that can give you the desired look and be a little easier to make running-friendly.

Choose mostly black with pops of purple, magenta, and lime green.

No one shoots like Gaston,

Makes those beauts like Gaston,

Then goes tromping around wearing boots like Gaston.

I use antlers in all of my decorating,

My what a guy Gaston!

Gaston's look is easy to pull off with a red top and black bottoms. Just add a belt and a pop of yellow at the collar and you're set!

Clockwise from top left; Black Brilliant Hi-Rise Legging 28", Red Copper Charged Tank, Black Unwind Joggers, Red All Star Bra

"I'll turn him into a flea, a harmless, little flea, and then I'll put that flea in a box, and then I'll put that box inside of another box, and then I'll mail that box to myself, and when it arrives... I'll smash it with a hammer!"

Go with all the purple and plum for an Yzma-inspired look! Don't forget the over the top lashes and lipstick!

And last but not least... Off with their heads!

Choose reds, black, and a pop of yellow for a Queen of Hearts look! Add a small crown, put that hair up into a messy bun, and find (or make!) a tutu using red, black, white and yellow tulle.
